Pine River - Wilma Jean Long, 73, formerly of Rice, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2018, at Good Samaritan Society-Bethany in Brainerd. A private family gathering will be held to celebrate Wilma's life, and she will be interred at the Minnesota State Veteran's Cemetery in Little Falls. Arrangements are being made by Brenny Funeral Chapel, Pequot Lakes, MN.
Wilma was born June 18, 1944 to Frank and Dorothy (Hiscock) Long. She graduated from St Cloud Technical High School and attended St Cloud State for two years before joining the U.S. Navy, where she served as a medical corpsman for two years. After her military service, Wilma took California State Boards for LPN and worked in both hospitals and nursing homes. After moving back to Minnesota, she attended classes at Vocational School in St Paul to become a Certified Lab Assistant, and later a Medication Aide. Wilma worked for more than twenty years in the nursing field, including many years at Good Samaritan Society in Pine River. She also spent some time working at Boyd Lodge Crosslake Resort on Whitefish Lake.
In her spare time, Wilma enjoyed helping friends, reading, and playing cribbage. While living in Pine River, she was frequently seen walking to the library where she was well supplied with a wide variety of books. She also regularly donated blood, in keeping with her spirit of helping others. Wilma will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends.
Wilma is survived by brothers and sisters Shirley (George) Christy, Coon Rapids, Richard, Peoria, AZ, Phyllis (Don) Miklos, North Prairie, William, (Yvonne), Coon Rapids, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Frank, Eugene and Merle, and sister-in-law MaryAnn.
Wilma's family would like to extend special thanks to all the staff at GSS-Bethany in Brainerd for the excellent care they provided to Wilma for the past year. We are deeply grateful.
