William Green, age 85, of Hackensack, died Saturday, October 18, 2008, at Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji, MN. He was born August 20, 1923 in Walker, MN, to Frank and Jesse Green. He attended grade school in Hackensack and graduated from high school in 1941.
He continued his education at the Minneapolis School of Business, and, after graduating, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served for four years in supplies. He was discharged in 1946 and was recalled in the Korean Conflict in 1950 for one year.
Bill married Bette Woodruff on December 13, 1952, and they made their home in Hackensack where Bill continued to work in the Hackensack Lumber & Hardware Store. He served as the Hackensack Clerk after being voted in on a write-in ballot. In 1960 he became Mayor, and in 1989 was elected to the town council on which he served for several years. A member of the American Legion since 1946, he served as Commander and Treasurer. He was a member of the Lions, was a Mason, as well as a lifetime member of the Osman Shrine Temple and the Osman Temple Clowns. He was the 2001 Outstanding Citizen in Cass County. He was also a great hunter of water fowl and upland game.
He is survived by his wife, Bette; son, Jeff Green of Guthrie; daughter, Lisa VanVickle (Brian) of Walker; son, Tom Leaper of Guthrie; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Jesse Green.
Memorials may be sent to Deep Portage or the Hackensack City Park. Services will be 2 PM on Saturday, October 25 at Union Congregational Church in Hackensack, with Pastor Michael Small officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Hackensack.
