William DeVries of Brainerd, MN died Thursday, March 07, 2002 at Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd. Services will be Saturday, March 9, 2002 at 10:30 AM at Woodland Good Samaritan Village Chapel with Duane Block and Reverend Mark Whittemore co-officiating. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. William O. DeVries was born on July 21, 1911 in Rock Valley, Iowa to Opke and Bertha (Plummer) DeVries. He grew up and farmed in Iowa. On November 22, 1936 in Rock Valley, Iowa he was united in marriage to Jeanette Warntjes. In 1940 they moved to Pequot Lakes where he continued farming, and then they moved to Baxter. He owned Baxter Lumber and Wrecking. They moved to California in 1962 and he worked for the Sears Roebuck & Co. for 10 years retiring at age 62. He enjoyed deep-sea fishing. In November of 1998 his wife died. He then moved back to Brainerd and lived with his children. He became a resident of Woodland Apartments in the summer of 1999.
William is survived by 2 daughters, Adrianna (Duane) Block of Lake Shore, MN, Janet Valente of Crawford, GA; 1 son Gerben (Bonnie) DeVries of Brainerd; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. His wife, Jeanette, 1 infant son; parents; 5 sisters and 2 brothers preceded him in death.
