Virgil D. Berkman, age 78, of Hackensack, died Saturday, July 5th, at his home. Services will be held on Tuesday, July 8th, at 2:00 in St Paul?s Lutheran Church in Hackensack with Pastor Thea Monson officiating. Burial will take place later in Glen Haven Cemetery in Crystal. Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter has been in charge of local arrangements.
Virgil DeVere Berkman was born on September 16th, 1924 near Winthrop, Minnesota to Gunnard and Ruby Ann (Ericson) Berkman. He grew up on the family farm and attended school nearby. On June 22nd, 1946 he married Doris Gulsvig in Belgrade, Minnesota. Together they farmed for a few years before moving to Minneapolis where Virgil worked in residential construction around the Twin Cities. In 1987 they retired to Baby Lake near Hackensack. Virgil was a member of St Paul?s Lutheran Church, was active in the Senior Center and the local Lake Association. Throughout the years Virgil has enjoyed the out of doors, especially hunting, fishing, gardening, working around the house and in the yard. He also enjoyed music, dancing, singing and traveling. Virgil has been involved with the Boy Scouts for many years and has received several awards for his commitment.
Virgil Berkman is survived by his wife of 57 years; Doris, 3 daughters; Patricia (David) Eeg of Arroyo Grande, California, JoAnne (William) Walsh of Sunnyvale, California, and Lori (Richard) Weyrauch of Brooklyn Park, a son; Glenn (Karen) Berkman of Donnelly, 2 sisters; Violet Walz of Winthrop, and Pearl Johnson of Minneapolis, a brother; David (Barbara) Berkman of North Branch, 9 Grandchildren, and 4 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers; Kenneth and Dale.
