Violet Cecilia Smith of Pine River passed away October 5, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth. Vi was born May 20, 1926, to Frank and Elizabeth Shamp in rural Pine River. She married Floyd Smith October 27, 1945. She enjoyed spending time outside, taking walks, gardening and relaxing by the campfire. She also enjoyed canning, playing cards, dancing and playing harmonica, but most of all, Vi loved spending time with her family gathered together. Vi was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. She was active in the Pine River Legion Auxiliary, Toys for Tots, and the Smith Family Thanksgiving Dinner. She held several township offices and enjoyed every aspect of the small town life.
Violet is survived by her children: Mike (Ruth), Tom (Lynn), Teresa (Todd) Chambers, Pat, David (Joan), Bill, Shirley (Mike) Forrey, Lisa (Jim) Douglas, and Mary Roubal; 16 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; siblings: Clara Connor, Vern (Lorraine) Shamp, Marie Johnson and Mary K. Davis; many nieces and nephews and a whole lot of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Floyd; son, Gregory Joseph; and siblings: Burt, Archie and Ruth Shamp and Katherin Pearl Revell.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM on Wednesday, October 10, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Pine River, with Father Bruce Engen officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:30 to 7 PM, with Rosary at 7 PM, at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Ponto Lake Cemetery.
