Violet J. Fenton, age 88, of Pine River, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2014, at Brookside Comfort Care, Pine River. She was born to Clarence and Lena (Shenand) Hanks on March 17, 1926, in Bagley, MN. Vi attended grade school west of Bagley then attended high school in Backus, graduating in 1943. She married Earl G. Fenton in Omaha, NE, on July 8, 1948. After living in Omaha for a few years they moved to Denver, CO, then Los Angeles, CA. In 1950 they bought a farm 7 miles west of Backus where they milked cows and also raised sheep and hogs, and later, beef cattle. In 2005 Earl and Vi moved to Pine River where they spent their retirement.
Vi served on the Cass County Fair Board and was secretary for many years. She was a volunteer at the Hackensack Co-op and worked for 25 years at the Pine Mountain Tower during the spring watching for fires. She was a member of the Homemakers Group and was a very active volunteer for the Backus Old Timers paper. She loved gardening and many people enjoyed her strawberries.
Vi was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Earl in 2011. She will be dearly missed by her nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
Committal service will be 1 PM on Friday, July 11, at the Minnesota State Veteran's Cemetery, Little Falls.
