Vernon F. Skogen, 91, of Brainerd, MN died on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at Edgewood Vista in Brainerd, MN. A Memorial Service for Vern will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at 11:00AM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brainerd, MN with Pastor Sarah Marshall officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.
Vernon was born on March 6, 1924 in Hillsboro, ND to Manick and Anna (Hoff) Skogen. He was raised at the family farm in Peerless, MT before graduating from Hillsboro High School. Vernon entered the United States Army during WWII, serving in the European Theater. Following his honorable discharge, he attended North Dakota State University where he graduated with his teaching degree. Vern was united into marriage on June 17, 1950 to Dorothy Ludwig. He taught history in Minnesota for the next 32 years. He moved to the Brainerd Lakes Area in 1958, where he taught in the Brainerd School System until his retirement. Vern was one of the original founders of Boy Scout Troop#83. He enjoyed reading, carpentry, and being at the cabin. Vernon was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Brainerd VFW, and American Legion. He was an avid North Dakota State University sports fan. Vernon's greatest accomplishment was his family and his teaching career.
Vernon is survived by his children, Rick (Jan) Skogen of Brainerd, MN, Dave (Sheila) Skogen of Brainerd, MN, Paul (Tracey Marchand) of Brainerd, MN, Mark (Cori Wrobel) of Brainerd, MN, Nancy (Rick) Sweet of Brainerd, MN; niece, Gail Migliorini; eleven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Manick and Anna; wife, Dorothy; brother, Elmer; sister, Violet; niece, Valorie; and granddaughter, Sheena. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN.
