Thomas Peter Mares, age 72, of rural Cushing, died Monday afternoon at his home with his loving family at his side. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Friday at the Lincoln Evangelical Free Church. Friends may call from 5 until 7 PM Thursday evening at the Randall Funeral Home in Randall, MN and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery at Cushing.
Tom as was born March 25, 1934 in Minneapolis, MN, the son of Peter and Elsie (Holt) Mares. He grew up in the Lincoln area and attended school at Little Falls, graduating in 1951. On September 22, 1956 he married Jane Johnson in Aurora, MN. During their early years of marriage they moved around often because he worked construction. The family settled in Little Falls and then to the Lincoln/Cushing area for the past 15 years. He worked for Ralph M. Parsons and the City of Little Falls until retiring in 1997. He enjoyed having his children and grandchildren visit and especially enjoyed Christmas with the whole family gathered together. In retirement he built a little town called Sunrise City. He enjoyed restoring old tractors, giving kids wagon rides, and anything that reminded him if his youth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Elsie. Tom is mourned in passing by his wife of nearly fifty years, Jane; his children, Mary (Rick) Buersken, of Brainerd, Paul Mares, of Lincoln, Steve Mares, of Mesa, AZ, Norma (Ken) Miller, of Virginia, and Margaret (Randy) Kurowski, of Little Falls; grandchildren, Bob and Eric Johnson, and their father, Steve; Travis, Roxanne, Shane, Audrey, Ashley, and Amber Mares, and their mother, Janell; Wendy and Danny Miller, Thomas Swenson, Dillan Kalis and his father Tony; and Kayla and Emily Kurowski; one great-grandchild, Angela; his brother and best friend, Jim (Barb) Mares, of Bertha; and nieces, Lisa (Brent) Bacon, of International Falls, and Mary (Dennis) Sapp, of Little Falls; and nephews, Michael (Nina) Mares, of Tennessee and Brad Mares of Minneapolis; and many wonderful friends.
