Thomas Doerfler

Thomas Michael Doerfler, 53, died quietly at home July 13, 2015 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Growing up in Lakeville, MN, he was happiest when he was finally able to move up North. He loved Crosslake. Tom was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and observing nature. Feeding deer in his backyard and watching all the "critters" from his patio door was one of his favorite past-times. He always knew just what was prowling the neighborhood. If you wanted to know where the fish were biting, if the bucks were in rut or how thick the ice was all you had to do was ask Tom.

His garden was dear to his heart and always a favorite summertime topic of conversation. He was the first to put a seed in the ground in the spring and just couldn't wait to tell you about his first tomato or (his favorite) digging new potatoes.

He was a hard worker and enjoyed working with his dad, "Butch" and his uncle, Joe, brushing lots and clearing trees. He knew how to use his chainsaw and was the best man-in-the-woods his dad ever knew.

Tom was a simple man with simple needs. His gentle spirit, quick smile and kind ways will be missed by many.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Donald "Butch" and Debra Doerfler; partner, Tammy Smiley; brothers, Bill (Kerri Hedberg) and Jeremiah "JJ"; sisters, Suzie (John Milan) and Patty (Jeff Baardson); step-brothers, Andy and Abe Wallin; stepdaughter, Nicole Bjorklund; granddaughter, Allie Bjorklund; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving mother, Gail; wife, Ilya; stepson, George; grandparents; and cousins, Joe Jr., Ricky, Michael, Jeannie, Gerry, Albert, and Steve.

A Memorial Service will take place at 5:30 PM, Friday, July 17, 2015 at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake. Family and friends are invited to gather one hour prior to services. Interment will follow at Pinewood Cemetery.
