Sunnie Asplund

Sunnie Rae Asplund, born July 28, 1954, in Cloquet, MN, died peacefully in her sleep on January 31, 2025 at her home in Gull Lake, MN. Sister, aunt, cousin, mother, and loyal friend, Sunnie lived her life bringing joy to others. Those of us lucky enough to know her watched her spend endless energy rescuing the hopeless and the helpless- four legged, two legged, or finned.

She was a fixture on Gull Lake and the community; Bartending at Quarterdeck and Shep’s, working at Lakes Jam, or helping vacationers make the best of their time at Madden’s, Sunnie had the gift of making people feel welcome. Always listening, always quick with a joke or a wry observation. She worked as a paraprofessional for the Pillager School District.

Sunnie loved the water and the people it attracted. A champion swimmer, a great water skier, and always tanned as much as anyone can be living above the 42nd parallel.

Sunnie adventured and loved just as fiercely as she was beloved. Singular and feisty, like the Betta fish she always had, she lived her life her way without regret.

Sunnie is survived by her younger brothers Jon (Sue) of Ellendale, MN, Paul (Raphael) of Los Angeles, CA, and Keith (Paula) of St. Cloud, MN; step-children Kelsey and Jeremy; nieces and nephews Reed, Adrienne, Zachary, Nicholas, and Samantha.

Sunnie is preceded in death by her parents, Kay and Frank, and her dog Sweet Pea.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brenny Family Funeral Chapel, Baxter.
