Sharon Spencer

Sharon Spencer of Deerwood, MN, passed away peacefully at the Cuyuna Regional Care Center on December 12, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Nolan Spencer; son, Kelly (Sue) of Bloomington, IL; daughters, Kristin Spencer (Dick) of Plymouth, MN, and Randi Vergin (Tim) of Buffalo, MN. Other survivors are grandsons, Phillip Spencer of Hopkins, MN, and Kyle Spencer of Bloomington, IL; step-granddaughters, Monica Anderson (Erik) of Wauwatosa, WI, and Vanessa Schraufnagel of Bloomington, IL; and step-great-granddaughter, Skyler Anderson of Wauwatosa, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Sharon was born on October 12, 1940, in Bagley, MN to Harley Gilbertson and Gladys Halti Gilbertson. She graduated from Austin High School in Chicago in June 1958. Her parents purchased a business in Bagley, MN in 1958. Later that summer, Sharon came to Bagley to assist her parents in the business. She met Nolan Spencer in October of 1958, and they were married on April 20, 1960 in Bagley. They moved to Beloit, WI in 1961, where Nolan has his first teaching job. They moved to Crosby-Ironton, MN in 1962, where Nolan taught until 1997. It was here that they raised their family.

Sharon attended Brainerd Junior College and graduated from St. Cloud State University in 1975 with a degree in speech pathology. She was a speech clinician for Head Start for a year, then was on staff in the McGregor school system until retiring in 1986 for health reasons. She enjoyed her work. Sharon enjoyed reading, traveling, and her family. She also enjoyed spending childhood summers in Bagley, MN, living with her paternal grandmother, Flora Gilbertson and swimming at Lake Lomond with her close friends, Betty Pierson and Marilyn Moen.

Sharon requested that no services be held and memorials be made. A gathering of friends and family will be held at a later time.
