Ronald Jerome Foss, of Pequot Lakes, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at home, after battling cancer for 17 months. He was the third of three sons born to Hildor and Gertrude (Molitor) Foss. Ron was born December 29, 1946 at Abbot Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. He went to Robbinsdale Elementary, St. Austin's Grade School, and De Lasalle High School. Graduating from St. John's University in 1968, with a degree in Economics, he was best known for his quick wit, story telling, generosity, friendliness, and his love of sports.
Ron was a good athlete growing up and loved baseball, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, water skiing, softball, and golf. He was always an avid sports fan, watching golf, football, baseball, and racing (especially NHRA). But he cheered the loudest for the Vikings and Twins.
He worked for 36 years as the Advertising Manager for the Lake Country Echo and Echoland Shopper, before which, he worked as a Commercial Lending Officer in Minneapolis, MN and Omaha, NE. He retired in January of 2012 and spent his time volunteering at Eagle View Elementary.
He was an active member of the community, participating over the years in the Crosslake Volunteer Fire Department (12 years), the Crosslake Chamber of Commerce (President for 2 years), the Whitefish Classic and Antique Wood Boat Show (every year since it started, except the year in which his daughter got married), the Whitefish Chain Yacht Club, the Whitefish Area Property Owners' Association, the Ideal/Crosslake Scholarship Fund, and the Fundraiser Committee for the back 9 at the Whitefish Golf Course.
Ron enjoyed spending as much time as he could outdoors, cutting firewood, relaxing at the lake out on the boat, playing sports, fishing, spending time with his wife and children, and chatting with his numerous friends and everyone in the community.
Ron is preceded in death by his parents, Hildor and Gertrude; and his brothers, Richard and Robert. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Debra; his daughter, Kara (Jason) Cross; and his son, Andrew.
Services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2013, at the Crosslake Lutheran Church. Friends may call upon the church one hour before services and coffee and sweets will be served afterward.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
