Robert A. Thompson, age 72, of Milan, passed away Sunday, Jan. 12 at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 Saturday, January 18, at Kviteseid Lutheran Church in Milan. A Celebration of Bob's life and visitation with his family will be at the church from 5:00 to 7:00PM on Friday with a prayer service at 7:00 and also one hour prior to services on Saturday. Interment with Military Honors will be at Kviteseid Lutheran Cemetery.
Robert Allen Thompson was born July 23, 1941, in Milan, MN, the son of Alfred and Inez (Lovehaug) Thompson. He was baptized and confirmed in Kviteseid Lutheran Church and graduated from Milan High School in 1959. In May of 1964 he enlisted in the National Guard, serving his country for the next 8 years. Following his education he worked with his father and grandfather becoming the third generation of builders in the Thompson family. Bob built residential homes, agricultural building, and remodeled several area churches. After several years of owning and operating his own business he went to work as manager of a different construction company. In 1974 Bob and Judy purchased her family Century Farm west of Big Bend. He had always wanted to farm and was thrilled to finally have the opportunity. For the last 30+ years of his career he was the manager of the State Bank of Danvers Insurance Agency retiring in 2004.
Family was always the main focus of Bob's life. He drove countless miles and spent countless hours cheering on first his boys and then his grandchildren in as many sporting and school events as he and Judy could attend. Golf was another passion he pursued. Uncle Orlen and Bob played as a team in the Mens League at the Appleton Golf Course for many years. He was very active in his church serving as president of the congregation, deacon, and serving on the council. Other community activities he was involved in were volunteer fireman, city council, and boy scout leader. He and Judy loved to travel together and went on many trips.
Preceding Bob in death were his parents, Alfred and Inez; and brothers-in-law, Jim Kleven, Don and Maurice Gabrielson; and several uncles, aunts, nephews, and nieces. Left to mourn his passing and cherish his memory are his wife of 48 years, Judy; sons, Scott (Kirsten) of Lindstrom, MN, Trevor of Paynesville, and Tracy of Willmar; grandchildren, Bradee, Bryce, Blake, and Brock of Lindstrom, Garrett, Gabriel, and Grant of Paynesville, and Malerie, Colin, and Cody of Willmar; siblings, Judy Kleven of Milan, Rod (Mary Ellen) of Hancock, and Joyce (Jon) Jordahl of Moundsview, MN.
