Robert Julius Gustave Stern, 87, of Fort Ripley died on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Essentia Health/St. Joseph's Medical Center in St. Paul, MN. Funeral Services for Robert will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 1:00OPM at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN with visitation one hour prior to services at the chapel. Graveside service with military honors will be Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 10:00AM at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.
Robert was born on June 11, 1926 in Minneapolis, MN to Julius and Emma (Hoffman) Stern. He grew up in North Minneapolis and graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1944. Robert is a veteran of World War II who enlisted in the US Army September 6, 1944 and departed for Europe in January 1945. After returning from the war he attended Minnesota School of Business of St. Cloud. He married Betty Jeanine Baker on June 30, 1945 and was happily married for 55 years. Robert worked at the family greenhouse business, Robert Stern Florist, started by his grandfather in 1904 until he retired in 1993. During his working years he was very active in several organizations. He was a member of the Zuhrah Shrine Club in Minneapolis, Plymouth Lodge and was President of the Robbinsdale Lions Club. During his retirement he spent his summers at the family cabin on Crow Wing Lake near Brainerd, MN and his winters in Lake Havasu City, AZ. At this time he was also a member of the Aadzuhman Shrine Club in Brainerd, MN. After his wife, Betty passed away in 2004, Robert was blessed to spend the rest of his life with a very special lady, Marilyn Lutz.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Julius Albert Stern and Emma Louise (Hoffman) Stern. His brother, Richard passed away in March 2014. He is survived by Marilyn Lutz; his children, Robert (Robyn) Stern and Jeanne (Robert) Lindholm. He has three grandchildren, Sonya (Ben) Cox, Jessica (Matt) McKnight and Becky Lindholm (Justin Barron). He also has three great-grandchildren, Blaine and Evan Cox, and Ava McKnight.
Robert led a full life and to all that knew him know that there was never a dull moment and that you never knew what kind of silly remarks he would come up with. He was a wonderful father who always worked hard to take care of his family. He will be terribly missed by all that knew him. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN.
