Robert E. Mehl, age 78, of Baxter, died Saturday, July 13, 2002 at Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd. Services will be private. Memorials preferred to the Crosslake Lutheran Church building fund. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
Robert Mehl was born October 7, 1923 in Crivitz, Wisconsin, to Edwin and Mae (Pieper) Mehl. He grew up in Chicago, and became a bricklayer. He was married to Muriel Hartwig in Chicago on October 6, 1945. His career in construction spanned more than 40 years, during most of which he was a bricklayer forman. He worked on schools, government buildings, and churches, eventually constructing a public building in every Chicago suburb. He moved to Baxter in 1998, to be closer to his daughter and family. Robert was a member of the Bricklayers Union, Local 58. He enjoyed working on cars, and drove all over the country for enjoyment. He also enjoyed riding his Gold Wing motorcycle.
Robert E. Mehl is survived by his daughter Susan (Darrell) Swanson of Crosslake; granddaughter Laura (Brandon) Pederson of Crosslake; his former wife Muriel of Baxter; three sisters Hazel Mehl and Natica Heinrich of McHenry, IL and Sonia Rutledge of Greenville, SC; and a brother William Johnson of Scottsdale, AZ. His parents and two sisters Alice Rutledge and Pearl Woodworth preceded Robert in death.
