Richard F. Skumavc, 83, of Gladstone Lake near Nisswa, died Monday, November 16, 2009 at Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd, MN. A graveside service is planned for 11 AM, Friday, November 20, 2009 at the Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd with Father George Zeck officiating. Please meet at the 3rd Avenue Gate at 10:45 AM. Richard was born May 3, 1926 in Brainerd. He attended St. Francis School and after graduation furthered his studies at Nazareth Hall and the St. Paul Seminary. Richard began his career as a radio announcer for KLIZ in Brainerd. In 1949, Richard was called to serve his country in the United States Army. For most of his military career, Richard was an instructor at various bases. He also spent nine months in the South Pacific on the Island of Einewtok where they performed atomic tests. Following his honorable discharge, Richard returned to broadcasting in Williston, ND, Virginia, MN, and Duluth, MN. In 1959 he became the Broadcast Editorialist for the Wisconsin Farmers Union in Chippewa Falls, WI. In 1995, he returned to Brainerd to be near his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Michelle (Paul) Bergerson; son, Richard (Kori Rae) Skumavc; granddaughter, Noelle Ann Bergerson; grandson, Tanner Michael Bergerson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Francis; brother, Father Mike Skumavc; and a son Michael Charles Skumavc.
