Richard Schurtz

Richard Jean (Dick) Schurtz, age 75 of Baxter, MN, went to be with the Lord
on September 12, 2011 at Essentia-St. Joseph�s Medical Center in Brainerd.
Richard was born on July 4, 1936 in Webster City, IA, as the youngest of
three children born to Jean Meredith and Ruth (Brown) Schurtz. At age six
the family moved to Trimont, MN where he graduated from high school in 1954.
He attended the University of Minnesota from 1956 to 1961 and graduated with
a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics. After college he
became a banker and served as President and CEO of banks in Olivia, MN, New
Richmond, WI, and Lakeview, MI.
Dick was active in community and professional associations throughout his
working years, such as: Michigan Bankers Association; The American Bankers
Association (Community Bankers Council 1987-1993); Wisconsin Bankers
Association; Indianhead Council Boy Scouts of America, St. Paul, MN; New
Richmond Industrial Development Commission Chairman for 8 years, Past
President of United Way of New Richmond, WI, and Montcalm County Extension
Advisory Council.
He married Shirley Ogren in 1955, having three daughters, Julann (Timothy)
Hanson, St. Paul, Kathleen (Carl) Fitzloff, Mankato, MN, Tracy (Jeff)
Thompson, Lakeville, MN and grandchildren Kristina(fiance�, Jim Olson)
Hanson, Jordan(Andy) Smith, Andrew Hanson, Jonathan Fitzloff, Thomas
Fitzloff, Jacob Thompson and Sam Thompson. He retired on December 31, 1999
and moved to Pequot Lakes, MN . In 2000 Dick married Janice (Fouks)
Fernstrom of Northfield, MN. In 2004 he and Jan moved to Baxter, MN. In
retirement he has been active in volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity
and Timberwood Church.
In 2007 he was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Prior to his
illness he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, skiing and during his retirement
he had taken up watercolor painting. Dick�s faith was strong and unwavering
throughout his illness and he will be greatly missed by his wife, children,
grandchildren, step-daughter Jennifer(Fernstrom)(Michael) Nava, sister Alice
(John) Mayer and numerous extended family and friends.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN. Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday,September 16 at Timberwood Church, north of Nisswa off Highway 371. Interment will be held on Saturday, September 17 at 2:00 p.m. at Fairview
Memorial Gardens, Fairmont, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials are
preferred.
