Richard Alan Felthous, 59, passed away after a short, but tough, battle with leukemia. He was born September 16, 1956, in Brainerd, the son of Frank and Bernice (Wolkenhauer) Felthous. He was raised and educated in Pine River and graduated high school in 1974. He loved telling stories about his time on the football, baseball, basketball, and cross-country teams.
He continued his education at St. Cloud Vocational and Technical College where he specialized in carpentry. For 15 years, Richard worked as a finish carpenter for Don Foss before he became self-employed doing additions, remodels and new construction. Richard was a meticulous carpenter whose work was cherished and respected by friends, family, and clients, who, more often than not, became friends, too.
In 1980, Richard married Gloria Gensmer, his high school sweetheart, and the couple started their life in Richard's childhood home. The couple welcomed one daughter into their family, Caitlyn Alyce, in 1988. In 1994, they moved to Upper Whitefish to the home Richard had lovingly built for his family.
Richard was a member of the Pine River Fire Department for 20 years. He and friends spent many volunteer hours building the softball fields east of Pine River. Richard also cherished the summer, when he could grow his beautiful garden and give friends and neighbors vegetables. He enjoyed fishing and was always ready to tell stories about the monster walleyes he caught (or almost caught!) out on Whitefish Lake. His love of life, quick wit, tireless work ethic, generosity, and appreciation for the simplest things will be missed by many.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria, of Pine River; daughter, Caitlyn (Tyler) Pierson, of Minot, ND; mother, Bernice Hart, of Greely, CO; and his half-brother, Alan Hart, of Greely, CO. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank.
Funeral Services for Richard will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Family and friends are invited to gather Tuesday evening from 5-8 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Pequot Lakes and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Interment will take place at Stonybrook Cemetery.
