Richard Edinger

Richard “Dinger” Howard Edinger, age 71, of Elk River, MN, passed away on March 23, 2025. He was born on August 28, 1953, in Glenwood, MN, to Howard Edward Edinger and Mary Kathryn Johnson.

Richard’s life was one of service, commitment, and joy. He graduated from high school in June 1971, after which he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving from 1971 to 1974. His dedication to protecting and serving others continued when he pursued a career in law enforcement. Richard served for 23 years as a police officer in Minneapolis and 14 years spent as a distinguished homicide detective. His work in the department earned him the admiration and respect of his colleagues, and he considered them to be his extended family.

On October 26, 1984, Richard married the love of his life, Cheryll Holmes, in Elk River, MN. Together, they built a loving and supportive family.

Richard had many passions in life. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed the occasional bourbon, often with friends and family by his side. His love for the outdoors included deer hunting and fishing, activities he cherished throughout his life. Above all, Richard’s infectious laugh, which could light up any room, will be remembered by all who knew him.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife Cheryll, their children Scott (Ashley) Sanford and Julie (Gene) O'Connell, and his precious grandchildren Landon, Ava, and Nolan Sanford. He is also survived by his sister Gayle (Jeff) Schaub, along with sisters-in-law LuAn (Phil) Schutte and Mary (Joe) Bistodeau, and special nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Mary Edinger.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the brothers and sisters in law enforcement of the Minneapolis Police Department, Sherburne County Sheriff's Department and Elk River Police Department for their unwavering support during this time.

A Celebration of Life will be on Monday, March 31, 2025 at 12:00pm with a visitation 2 hours prior at Word of Peace Lutheran Church in Rogers, MN (21705 129th Ave N Rogers, MN 55374). Richard's funeral will be livestreamed on Monday. Please watch here
