Phyllis Young

Phyllis M. Young, age 89, of Staples, passed away at the Lakewood Health System Hospital on Monday, July 23. A funeral service is planned for Monday, July 30, at 11:00 AM, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Staples. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, at the church. Burial will be at the Scandia Valley Cemetery.

Phyllis was born on January 21, 1923, to Theodore and Hazel (Crandall) Berquam, in Minneapolis, MN. In 1944, she married George Young and together they raised five children. After George retired, they moved up to Crookneck Lake in 1970. The two shared many years together, until George's passing in 1993. Phyllis moved to Staples, in 2004. Phyllis loved to play cards, flower garden, and spend time with her family. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Scandia Valley Lions Club, Garden Club, Mothersingers, Church Circle, Card Club, VFW Auxiliary, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She taught Sunday School, and was a Girl Scout Leader.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Lancetta Allen, Linda (Dennis) Costello, Amy (Michael) Gallagher, Jon Young, and Cindy Hase; 11 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents; a brother, Warren Berquam; and a great-granddaughter, Kalyssa.
