Peter Joseph Althoff, of Brainerd, formerly of Grey Eagle, MN died Monday, January 21, 2008 at St. Joseph Hospital in Brainerd. Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:00 pm at St Mathias Catholic Church of Ft. Ripley, with Father Gabriel Waweru officiating. Family will receive friends on Friday, January 25 from 4 8 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN. Interment will be on Monday, January 28 at 10:00 in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, in Little Falls, MN. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Home of Baxter, MN
Peter Joseph Althoff was born July 19, 1939, on the family farm near St. Mathias. He was the fifth child of Edward Sylvester and Johanna Catherine (Ress) Althoff. Peter attended School District #8 in Crow Wing County and then Brainerd High School where he enjoyed playing on the Basketball Team. After graduation in 1957, he attended Brainerd Junior College, taking business courses and worked for Citizens State Bank until he was drafted into the Army in March of 1963. He took Basic Training at Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri and Medical Training at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He was then assigned to the Berlin Brigade in Germany and traveled much of Europe before returning to the Brainerd area. Peter also worked for A-Tek in Brainerd, Grand Casino Mille Lac, NFO, and the Brainerd Post Office. Peter enjoyed traveling, touring the western States and Alaska many times, often by motorcycle. He also enjoyed gardening, Scuba Diving, flying airplanes, and hunting. Peter inherited his fathers passion for fishing and managed to get most of his nieces and nephews hookedas well. Peter lived most recently at the Bethany Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Brainerd.
Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Johanna. He is survived by four sisters, Dorothy (Lester) Berscheit of Grey Eagle, Doreen (Gordon) Berscheit, Johann (Bob) Isder of Little Falls, Mary Thorpe of Thornton, Colorado; three brothers, Edward (Mary) Althoff of Lewistown, MT, Kenneth (Gail) Althoff of Grand Forks, ND, Paul Althoff of Brainerd, and numerous nieces and nephews.
