Paul Duane Metzler, 79, of Staples, MN died Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Lakewood Health System Care Center in Staples, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM, Friday, September 26, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples, MN with Father Joe Korf officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather from 5-7 PM, Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples, MN and continuing Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Military Honors provided by Motley American Legion Post #124. Interment at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples, MN.
Paul was born October 28, 1934 in Staples, MN to Paul and Mary (Sanger) Metzler. He served in the US Army. He grew up and went to school through the 8th grade in Staples. Paul married Lois Stevens on December 27, 1961 in Staples, MN. He was partners with Hank Macho and later became sole proprietor of Staples Woodwork and Cabinetry for over 25 years. His children and grandchildren helped Paul on many different jobs over the years. In 1988 he sold his cabinet shop to Crosslake Construction and worked for them for 14 years and then retired for the first time. Six months following his retirement, Paul owned and operated a handyman business called "The Handyman". He retired the second time in 2011. Paul enjoyed fishing when he was younger, mowing lawns and woodworking.
Paul is survived by his children, Jana (Wayne) Steinkraus of Brainerd, MN, Michael (Francine) Metzler of Staples, MN, Steven (Lisa) Metzler of Brainerd, MN; ten grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois; sister, Margaret; brother Bernard. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples, MN.
