Olaf J. Northagen, age 69, of Ideal Township died Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at St. Joseph?s Medical Center in Brainerd.
Olaf Julian Northagen was born February 25, 1933 in Dahlen Township, Nelson County, North Dakota to Henry J. and Joran (Steinley) Northagen. He graduated from high school in Dahlen and then from the University of North Dakota,Grand Forks in 1955. He entered the US Navy and graduated from Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He served as a Lieutenant JG on naval carriers, completing several overseas tours. Following his honorable discharge he was married to Lorraine M. Chapman, his wife of 45 years, on September 15, 1957 in St. Hilaire, MN. The couple lived and raised their family in the Minneapolis area, where he worked as a Vice President for US Bank for 25 years. Following his ?retirement? from US Bank, Olaf accepted a position as Vice President with the First National Bank of Anoka (now Wells Fargo), where he worked an additional 10 years until his retirement in 1993. After retirement Olaf and Lorraine moved to the lakes area in Ideal Township. He was a member of the Crosslake Lutheran Church. He was active in an investment club and also assisted the DNR with a Wildlife Management Area. He enjoyed nature and the outdoors very much, and was a gardener. Olaf and Lorraine enjoyed traveling, and made memorable trips to Europe, Norway, and Alaska. He especially loved and enjoyed his grandchildren.

Olaf Northagen is survived by his wife Lorraine; a daughter Lisa M. Northagen of Chaska; two sons Timothy Lee (Denise) Northagen of Maple Grove and Michael Lynn (Mary) Northagen of Inver Grove Heights; two sisters Violet (Harlan) Charon of Hallock and Avis (Donald) Dvorak of Lankin; three brothers Gilman (Kathleen) Northagen of Michigan, ND, James (Doris) Northagen of Beaver Bay, and Lloyd (Betty) Northagen of Walhala, ND; and four grandchildren Lucas and Kylie Northagen and Austin and Kevin Northagen. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew Lonnie Northagen.

Funeral services will be Saturday, November 16, 11:00 AM, at Crosslake Lutheran Church, with Reverend Mark Anderson officiating. Interment will be at Pelican Woods Cemetery in Breezy Point. Military honors will be provided by the Crosslake American Legion, Post 500. Friends may visit on Friday, November 15, from 6-8:00 PM at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake, and on Saturday at the church for one hour prior to services. Memorials are preferred to the Crosslake Lutheran Church Building Fund, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of the giver?s choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel of Crosslake.
