Monroe Nichols, age 92, of Staples, passed away at the Lakewood Care Center on Wednesday, August 05, 2009. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, August 8th at 11:00 am at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Staples. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, at the church. Burial will be at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.
Monroe was born on August 4, 1917, in Staples, to William and Henrietta Nichols. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Staples, graduating in 1935. On April 9th, 1940, he married Beatrice Smith. Shortly after, they moved up to the Iron Range where Monroe worked as a miner. In 1945 they moved back to Staples where he took a job as a milkman. Monroe and Beatrice also cut, split, and sold firewood. He worked with his sons for 11 years at the Standard Station, until retiring in 1987. Monroe enjoyed fishing, playing cards, woodworking, gardening, and making homemade ice cream. He was a member of the Congregational Church, Church mens Club, and held many Church Offices.
Monroe is survived by his wife of 69 years, Beatrice; children, Richard (Margo) of Staples, Jeanette Hardy of Milaca, and James (Betty Jo) of Aldrich; sister-in-law, Lucile Nichols of Wilmar; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill, Charles Red, and Roy; and sisters, Ellen Dorritand Mary.
