Melvin A. Smith, 85, of rural Motley died on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Lakewood Health System Care Center in Staples, MN. Graveside services for Melvin will be held at Motley Public Cemetery at a later date.
Melvin was born on May 24, 1928 in Staples, MN to Albert and Helen (Mudick) Smith. He entered the Merchant Marines and then the US Army. Following his Honorable Discharge, Melvin was united in marriage to Lillian Dukowitz on August 26, 1950 in Staples, MN. Melvin worked for Northern Pacific Railroad for 15 years, then Federal Cartridge in Anoka for 20 years and then he retired to rural Motley where he has been a resident until his death. He enjoyed traveling, tractors, hunting and guns, but especially wanted to be remembered as a successful husband, father and family man.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Lillian; children LeRoy (Cyndee) Smith of Schroeder, MN, Dan (Terri) Smith of Motley, MN, Rodney Smith of Motley, MN; ten grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. His parents and one sister, Marvel, precede him in death. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples, MN.
