Melvin Mass, age 79, of Merrifield died at his home on Saturday, March 9, 2002. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at 10:30 AM, at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, with Reverend Jon Gehrls officiating. Friends may visit on Tuesday, March 12, from 6-8:00 PM, at the funeral chapel. Interment will be private. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
Melvin John Mass was born April 10, 1922, near Henning, Minnesota, to Anna Ida (Linde) and Friedrich Mass. He grew up and attended school in Janesville. He moved to Brainerd at the age of 17, where he met and married his wife, Doris (Ruby) Mass. He worked as a boilermaker for the Northern Pacific and Mesabi railroads for several years. He then worked for the City of Brainerd, in the Street Department, a job he retired from. He did track maintenance at the North Central Speedway for several years. He served on the Brainerd Fire Department for many years, and was an active member of the Merrifield Lions.

Melvin Mass is survived by three daughters, Marie (Russell) Kittredge of Walpole, MA, Wendy Showers of Brainerd, and LaWanna ?Jean? (Bryan) Dosh of Brainerd; three sons, Donald (Jean) Mass of Brainerd, Charles Mass of Brainerd, and Walter (Brenda) Mass of Wheaton; a sister, Viola (Wilford) Flaler of Easley, SC; 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; and his fiancée, Lois Wiehle of Brainerd. Melvin?s wife Doris, his daughter Candy, his parents, his brothers Herman, Otto, Larry, Ervin, August, and Elmer, and his sisters Dora, Rosa, Minnie, and Esther preceded him in death.
