Maxine M. Houg, age 85, of Sartell, and formerly Pine River, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2007, at Country Manor in Sartell. She was born September 3, 1922 in Anamosa, IA, to Paul and Gertrude Thompson.
Maxine moved from Iowa to the Brainerd area after a short marriage that ended in her husband's death. She met and married Kenneth Houg on July 19, 1941 at the home of Muriel and Chuck Buss in a double ceremony.
She was a lifetime member of the Pine River Legion Auxiliary and was very involved in church activities at First Lutheran Church in Pine River. She waitressed at Torske's and the Pinewood Cafes in Pine River for over 25 years. She and her husband ran a daycare in their home and loved the children they cared for, most of whom have kept in touch over the years.
She is survived by her sons: Roger Houg (Sharon) of St. Cloud, Dennis Houg (Annette) of Rice, Dale Houg (Margie) of Cold Spring; daughter, Karen Gerrard (Greg) of Naples, FL; ten grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Opal Johnson of Pine River, Muriel Buss of Pequot Lakes; and many other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, and all her siblings.
Although her memory was lost to Alzheimers, she enjoyed the love and support of her children and grandchildren, and recognized and returned their love.
Services will be 11 AM on Thursday, November 29 at First Lutheran Church, Pine River, with Pastor Bonnie Lomen officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Pine River. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
