Mary Call Sobania, 73, died Wednesday, July 17, 2019 in Aitkin, MN. A visitation will be held at Brenny Family Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN at 5:00PM on Tuesday, July 23, 2019. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at St. Alice Catholic Church in Pequot Lakes, MN, with visitation one hour prior. Interment will be at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.
Mary was born on December 11, 1945 in Madison, MN, to LeRoy and Phyllis Call. After graduating from Madison High School, she went on to become a teacher, working with people in the prison system to help them regain their lives. In 1985, she completed her graduate degree in Special Education at St. Cloud State University, as well as receiving a Fifth Year Certificate in special education, the equivalent of a master’s degree. In 1996, Mary was named “Teacher of the Year in Corrections,” an honor covering six states and two provinces. She worked in the field for over thirty years before retiring early with her dear husband Elmer to their lake home in Breezy Point. Mary was also well known for being the Queen Mother of the Breezy Belles in Bonnets, a red hat society group.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of many years, Elmer; sister Pat (Vern), brother Mike (Ann), and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents.
