Mary Deick Newman, age 79, of Randall/Lake Alexander area, formerly of St. Paul died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at St. Benedicts Senior Community in St. Cloud. Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the St. James Catholic Church in Randall with Father Leo Moenkedick presiding. Burial will be in the St. James Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7 on Friday, March 14 at the Brenny Funeral Home in Randall with parish prayers at 6:30. Also, visitation will be from 9:30 until the time of service at the church.
Mary was born October 31, 1928 in Cushing to the late John and Ella (Stoltenberg) Deick. She grew up in Cushing and graduated from Little Falls High School in 1946. She moved to Minneapolis where she was employed with Sears Roebuck. She met Frank L. Newman and they were married September 9, 1949. They moved to Billings, Montana where Mary worked at Rocky Mountain College. They spent the next few years moving between Billings, Minneapolis and San Diego, California where Frank was stationed with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. In 1953 they moved to St. Paul, MN where Mary worked at Macalester College. Mary held various jobs until 1972 when Mary was hired by the MN Department of Transportation where she worked until her retirement in 1993. Mary held many part-time jobs during her retirement years, the last being an elevator operator at the Young Quinlan Building in Minneapolis. Mary loved nature, the environment and animals, especially her cats. She planted many trees and spent weekends and summers at her lake home tending to the lawn and her garden. She loved working, meeting people, playing cards, walking and spending time with her nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her big heart and generosity.
Mary is survived by her sisters and brothers; Dorothy Valerius of New Brighton, Violet Carlson of Little Falls, Bernard (Jeanette) Deick of Crystal, and John T. (Jack) (Diane) Deick of Cushing, along with 19 nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; parents, John and Ella Deick; brothers, Robert and William (infant) Deick; and brothers-in-law Thomas Valerius and Edwin Carlson.
