Martha Shequen, age 78, of Staples, died at her home Wednesday morning, May 21, 2008. Funeral Service will be 11:00 am Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Faith Lutheran Church in Staples, with Rev. Stephen Sveom officiating. Family will receive friends Friday from 4-7 pm at Brenny Funeral Home and one hour prior the service at the church. Interment will be in Poplar Cemetery, Leader, MN. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Home of Staples.
Martha Ann Shequen was born on April 17, 1930 to Edward L. and Nora Anna McLaughlin in Milford, Iowa. She was baptized in Milford Congregational Church, Milford Iowa and confirmed at Swan Valley Lutheran Church at Leader, MN. She grew up very active in her church, through Sunday School, Luther League with canoe trips, quilting and daily Bible readings. She graduated with the class of 1948 at Pine River High School. She was united in marriage to Wayne Baker. After his death in 1952 she met and married John Shequen in 1956. She has been involved at Faith Lutheran Church in Staples, Senior Citizens, Leader Area Living Ladies Birthday Club, and Poplar Township Treasurer. She enjoyed being a homemaker but also drove kindergarten bus, and worked as a cook at the Elray.
Martha Shequen is survived by her children, Wayne (Elise) of Pine River, Douglas ( Jill) of Leader, Beverly (Dave) Hoemberg of Motley and Barbara (Mark) Schwarz of Benson; grandchildren, Brandon, Melissa, Phil, Krystal, Becca, Dylan, John, Jeremy, Jace, Luke, Chad; 2 great-grandchildren, Liliana, Lila; 1 brother Robert (Elsie) McLaughlin; special friend, Ernie Spilman; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Wayne Baker and John Shequen; and sister, Katherine Hildebrand.
