Marilyn Hovland Proffitt, age 69, Pine River, died Tuesday, October 29, 2004 at home, surrounded by her loving family. She fought a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She is now residing at home with her heavenly Father. Marilyn was born July 20, 1935, at her grandmother?s farm in Elizabeth, MN, to Henry and Emelia (Zimmerman) Hovland. She attended country school in Elizabeth, and went on to graduate early from Pelican Rapids. She graduated from Moorhead State University and taught school in Glenwood. On May 31, 1958, she married Kenneth Dean Proffitt. They spent their life together ministering to numerous congregations as pastor and wife. Marilyn also taught school during their years together. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, sewing, and, especially, helping others. Marilyn was known by many as an encourager through her example, prayers, cards, and letters.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Kenneth Proffitt, of Brainerd; her mother, Emelia Hovland of Fergus Falls; daughters Julie (Randy) Mapson of Pine River and Susan (Joel) Rose, of Chicago, IL; son Jay Proffitt of Rice Lake, WI; three grandchildren, Josh McClain, and Brock and Mikaela Rose; step-grandchildren Holly, Dustin, and Christina Mapson and Christopher Luttrell; brother Berton (Doris) Hovland, of Fergus Falls; sister Janice (Don) Benrud, of Moose Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Hovland.
Funeral services will be Saturday, October 30, 11 a.m., at First Baptist Church in Baxter, with Marilyn?s son-in-law, the Reverend Joel Rose, of Midwest Bible Church in Chicago, IL, officiating. Friends may visit Friday, October 29, 4-8 p.m., at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, with a time of sharing at 7 p.m., and at the church during the hour prior to services on Saturday.
