Margaret “Mo” Smith, 65, of New York Mills, MN died Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Lakewood Health System Care Center in Staples, MN.
Margaret was born June 12, 1952 in Starbuck, MN to Arnold and Helen (Hustad) Opdahl. She graduated from Starbuck High School in 1970 and went on to earn her degrees in Special Education and Speech Therapy from MSUM. Margaret worked at the Fergus Falls State Hospital when she first graduated from college. She then was hired by TOW (Todd/Ottertail/Wadena Counties) as a Special Ed Preschool Teacher and later was the Special Ed Teacher for Elementary and finally at the Wadena High School, retiring in 2010. Margaret spent almost 40 years living in New York Mills and was active in the Wadena Education System. She enjoyed antiquing, teaching, playing jokes on people and being a prankster. Margaret especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, Izzy and Shade.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Sarah (Joe Bounds) of Wadena, MN; former husband, Wayne Smith; siblings, Lanie (Ken) Klose of Staples, MN, Howard Opdahl of Glenwood, MN, Sylvia Moen of Starbuck, MN; grandchildren, Izzy and Shade Bounds; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Helen; and brother-in-law, Claire Moen. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples, MN.
