Major Robert Eugene 'Gene' Harris, 80, was promoted to glory March 30, 2015. Gene proudly served God and the Salvation Army for 43 years before he and his wife Carmon retired to Brainerd, Carmon's hometown, in 1998. Gene had met every General of the Salvation Army since earning his commission in 1957 until his last meeting with the organization's top person in 2014. Major Harris was a charismatic preacher, but he insisted he was simply a storyteller - retelling stories from the Bible, which contained a message for us to live by in today's world. He began service as a Corps Officers then moved into the Adult Rehabilitation Service in 1973. He had eleven different postings throughout the Midwest before retiring to Brainerd.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carmon, sons Bruce and Rodney, and his daughter Pamela. He has eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Salvation Army, 205 S. 5th St., Brainerd, MN 56401 at 11am, Saturday, April 25, 2015.
Donations appreciated to the Salvation Army of Brainerd.
