Luther Tweed

June 18, 1924 — October 16, 2017

At the age of 93, Luther Palmer Tweed passed away on October 16, 2017, at Essentia St. Joseph's in Brainerd, MN. Luther was born in Jewell, Iowa, on June 18, 1924, to Hans and Bertha Tweed. When he was 12 years old, the family moved north to Pequot Lakes. Lut and his identical twin brother, Lester, then attended Pequot Lakes School, graduating in 1942. Both boys played trumpet in the high school band, a skill both would use for many years playing taps for the Pequot Lakes Memorial Day Services and other occasions.

Luther enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. After attending diesel mechanic school, he served as a Motor Machinist's Mate aboard a mine sweeper, the USS Medrick in the Pacific. His ship went ahead of the other ships and aircraft carriers, clearing mines, so those vessels could safely enter harbors. Lut was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged on March 6, 1946. After his discharge, Lut returned to Minnesota, where he spent time with his brothers and parents. In 1949, he married Faye Joan Krumholz and settled permanently in Pequot Lakes, living next door to his twin brother and his family. Lut and his older brother Harris owned and operated Tweed Bros. Excavating for about 30 years or so. Tweed Bros. also loaded and delivered all the equipment for the old Pequot Lakes water tower, now the Bobber Tower. After retiring from the excavating business, Lut worked for a few years in maintenance at Breezy Point Resort. After retiring from that position, he helped his wife, Faye, with her gift shops in Breezy Point and Pequot Lakes.

Luther was a member of the Pequot Lakes Volunteer Fire Department for 19 years (serving as Chief at one point), a member of the Pequot Lakes Special Police Force, and a member of the Minnesota VFW Post 3839.
Family members fondly called him, "The Lawn Mower Man" because he loved to build and repair things -- including a lot of lawn mowers. He could build and fix anything and everything mechanical. Some of his favorite times were spent puttering in his garage and riding his lawn tractors. He also loved fishing -- a pastime he shared with his grandsons.

Lut was preceded in death by his wife, Faye, and infant son Michael Lew. He was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers Orrie Tweed, Arnold Tweed, Harris Tweed, sister Anne (Tweed) Butler, twin brother Lester Tweed, nephews Lowell Tweed, infant Jerry Tweed, Daniel Tweed, Brian Tweed, Terry Tweed, and niece Patricia Tweed.

Luther is survived by his best little buddy Bo, his children Greg Tweed (Julie), Vicki Palmer (John), Timothy Tweed, Kimberly Anderson (Jon), and Joan Gerrard. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and two sisters-in-law. Luther was the last of the original Tweed Family, and he will be greatly missed by all.

A celebration of Luther's life will be 1:00 PM Saturday, October 28 at Kline Funeral Home, Pequot Lakes. Burial will be in Our Savior's Cemetery, Pequot Lakes, immediately following the service. The family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship, at Kline Funeral Home, Pequot Lakes, following a private family graveside service. Memorials will be donated to the Jenkins VFW Post 3839.
