Lorraine Carter

February 23, 1926 — December 27, 2020

Lorraine Bernice (Young) Carter, 94, of Pine River passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 27, 2020 surrounded by her daughters at Senior Class Community in Pequot Lakes. Lorraine was born on February 23, 1926 to Myrtle Loney and Herb Young in Dodson, Montana.

Lorraine moved from Montana to Brainerd with her mother and baby sister in 1940 and graduated from Brainerd High School in 1944. She married Alfred H. Carter on November 12, 1946 and later moved to Pine River. In her early years, Lorraine worked at the lunch counter at the Scotts Store and the B&L Diner.  However, her most cherished job was being a dedicated housewife, mother and grandmother.

Lorraine took great pride in a clean house and was always dressed to perfection. She always had the coffee on and fresh cookies and homemade bread on hand and could whip up a meal for unexpected company in a matter of minutes. Lorraine always made sure her hair was done, and fresh red lipstick was a necessity at all times. She had a love for garage sales, camping, trips to the casino, road trips to visit friends and family, and being the best mom, grandmother and friend. She treated everyone with respect and made friends wherever she went.

Lorraine was a member of the Pine River First Lutheran Church, Pine
River American Legion Post 613 Auxiliary, Brainerd VFW, and the Red Hat Society.  She was a Sunday School teacher, Boy Scout leader, Girl Scout leader and 4-H leader.

Lorraine is survived by her children: Howard (Carin) Carter of Mississippi; Sandra (Marty) Heino of Pine River; Wendy (Alan) Shamp of Pequot Lakes; grandchildren: Bridget Hanks, Howie Carter Jr., Kyle Heino and Nicole Heino; great grandchildren: Hedy, Milo, Oliver and Theodore; and sister, Harriet (Ed) Roberts of Mississippi.

Lorraine is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred Carter; brothers-in-law, Robert and Alvin; sisters-in-law: Helen, Mabel, Marion, Lorena and Marie.

A very special thank you to the staff at Senior Class Community for their unconditional loving care for Lorraine, affectionately known as Lainey, and also a huge thank you to St. Croix Hospice Team for their devoted care. Thank you to Dr. Stephen Hanske for the many years of outstanding care to our mom.

A memorial service will be held at a later date due to Covid-19.
