Leona M. Schmidt, age 94, of Staples, passed away at the Bethany Good Samaritan Home in Baxter on Thursday, June 11, 2009. A memorial service is planned for Monday, June 15, at 2:00PM at the Staples United Methodist Church with Pastor Wes Johnson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Motley Public Cemetery.
Leona was born on August 25, 1914, in South May Township, Cass County, to Louis and Sadie (Alexander) Buchholz. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from the Motley High School with the class of 1935. She married Arlo L. Schmidt of Philbrook on April 9, 1939 in Grey Eagle, MN. Leona worked, at the Lakes Resorts around Brainerd and the cafes where she lived, as a cook, and was a homemaker. She enjoyed her flowers and gardening. Her hobbies where oil painting, ceramics, reading, crossword puzzles, and fishing. She was a member of the Staples United Methodist Church, the UMW, and Mary Alpha Circle.
Leona is survived by her daughter-in-law, Dorothy (Greenwaldt) Schmidt; grandchildren, John D. Schmidt and Kelly M. (Schmidt) Pendegayosh; three great-grandsons, Rodney J. Pendegayosh, Phillip W. Pendegayosh, and Sheldon Boyd Jr.; as well as one sister-in-law, Winnie Schmidt; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlo; son Gary; two sisters; and two brothers.
