Leona Deering

Leona (Macho) Deering, age 90, formerly of Moran, passed away at the Monticello-Big Lake Hospital Wednesday, February 25. A Funeral Mass will be offered Tuesday, March 3, at 11:00 AM, at The Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples, with Father Scott Wittkop officiating. Friends may also visit at the Funeral Home one hour prior to Mass. The wake will be Monday evening from 5-7 PM at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples, with Rosary and Parish Prayers at 6:15 PM. Burial will be at St. Isidores Cemetery in Moran.

Leona was born March 3, 1918, in Ward Township, to Anton and Lovena (Smith) Macho. After schooling Leona moved to Minneapolis where she worked at The Excelsior Bakery. On October 12, 1940, she married Leo Deering at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Minneapolis, with Geneva Macho and Casper Deering, witnesses. Leona and Leo farmed together and raised their children in Moran Township until Leos passing in 1988. In 1991, Leona moved to Mora, MN and since July of 2008, she resided at St. Benedicts Assisted Living in Monticello. Leona was an active member of St. Isidores Catholic Church in Moran and St. Marys in Mora. She loved to travel, visiting nearly every state, including Hawaii. She also visited Canada, Mexico, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and cruised the Caribbean. Leona was well known for her cake decorating, specializing in wedding cakes.

Leona is survived by her children, Marilyn Wagner of Plymouth, Doris Nichols of St. Michael, Betty (Gary) Koch of Mora, Gary (Wanda) Deering of Maple Grove, and Sharon (Chuck) Pearson of Westport, WA; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; siblings, Gevena (Don) Kitzman of Mesa, AZ, and Vernon (Lorraine) Macho of Motley; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; granddaughter, Lisa Wagner; parents, Anton and Lovena; and sister, Alma Logering.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.
