Leo Lawrence Svobodny, 79, died peacefully on May 10, 2012, at his home in Ingles, FL. Leo, the youngest of five children, was born in Minneapolis on August9, 1932, to Joseph & Ida (Becker) Svobodny. A 1950 graduate of DeLaSalle High School, Leo married Roberta M. Terry on May 2, 1953. After serving in the US Navy, he became a Minneapolis Police Officer and retired as a Sergeant. A service will be held graveside on Friday, May 18th, 2012, at 1:05pm at Fort Snelling Cemetery, Assembly Area 1.
Leo raised his family in Minneapolis and New Prague, MN.
In his retirement years, he lived in Texas, northern Minnesota, and Florida. He was an accomplished wood carver, enjoyed making rosaries, and loved to travel. He enjoyed the company of his family, friends, and his 2 dogs. Leo is survived by his 14 children:Paul (Laura), Lora (Tom) O'Hern, Celeste(Keith) Davis, Carol Harstad, Janice (Tim)Hix, Mark (Danette), Jean (Matt) Haeg, John(Kimberly) Ross-Svobodny, Mary Vangen, Catherine Dumke, Paula (Dan) Cummings, Jeannette Maxfield, Jennifer (Matt) Olson, Karen; his sister, Sr. Jane Svobodny, CSJ; 34 grandchildren; two great grandchildren, in-laws, cousins, and nieces & nephews.
Leo is preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, his parents, and 3 siblings. In memoriam, the family prefers donations be made to a hospice organization of your choice. A special thank you to Hospice of Citrus County in Florida for their compassionate care.www.hospiceofcitruscounty.org
