Leo N. Kowalski, age 70, of rural Pillager died Monday, August 26, 2002 at his home. Services will be on Friday, August 30, at 11 AM at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd, with Father Seamus Walsh officiating. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley. Friends may call on Thursday, August 29 from 5 ? 8 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter and again on Friday, at the church, 1 hour prior to the service. The Brainerd American Legion Post #255 will provide the honor guard. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
Leo Norman Kowalski was born on May 19, 1932 in Staples, MN to Martin & Rose (Gross) Kowalski. He moved to Minneapolis, and he served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. On January 29, 1966 he was united in marriage to Marianne Chute at Holy Rosary in Minneapolis. He was employed by Flour City Architecture Metals a division of Sea-Grave Corporation for 28 years. He was injured in 1975 and then retired on September 1, 1976. They moved to Pillager in October of 1979. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, VFW, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Eagles and a former member of the Moose. He enjoyed fishing, playing the accordion and harmonica, and enjoyed roller skating and dancing.
Leo is survived by his wife Marianne; 2 daughters, Rosann Kowalski of Princeton, MN, Carla (Mark) Niezgocki of Lakeville, MN; 2 sons Mark Kowalski of Pillager, Norman Kowalski of St. Paul, MN; 3 sisters Rose Hurd of Pillager, Kay Medearis of Brooklyn Park, Vonnie McCoy of Culver City, CA; 3 brothers Marty Kowalski of Wasilla, Alaska, Ed Kowalski of Moose Lake, MN, Dennis Kowalski of Queen Creek, AZ; 2 granddaughters McKenzie and Shanley. His parents 2 infant brothers and a sister Alice preceded him in death.
