Leo James Furnstahl, age 79, of Pine River, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2013, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born February 13, 1934, in Randall, MN, to Joseph and Catherine (Treacy) Furnstahl. Leo graduated from Little Falls High School in 1952, attended St. Cloud State University, and served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1954 to 1957. He married Carol Peterson on Nov. 7, 1959. Leo was employed at Crestliner Boats from 1957 to 1960, Hennepin Paper Company from 1960 to 1967, and Minnesota Power from 1967 to 1994 when he retired as Area Manager in Pine River. Leo was also an instructor for AARP 55 Alive driver education courses for 19 years and was a volunteer driver with Cass County Senior Transportation for 19 years. Leo had a tremendous love for family, and many hobbies; traveling, playing cards, biking, hunting, reading, wood-working and outdoor Christmas light displays. He was a member of the Pine River Legion, Pine River Lions, Pine River Economic Development Council, Knights of Columbus, Community Education Board and was board member of the Pine River Golf Course.
Leo is survived by his loving wife, Carol; daughter, Denise (Mike) Czech of Little Falls, and their children, Kayla (Chad) Epsen, Michelle (Kyle) Hoggarth, and Ashley Czech; son, David (Shari) Furnstahl of Lake Tapps, WA, and their children, Michael, Jessica, Chloe and Kelly Furnstahl; daughter, Renae (John) Schneider of Little Falls, and their children, Samantha (Brian) Richard, Brittany (Jordan) Olson and Lindsey Schneider; daughter, Maureen (Eric) Swanson of Avon Lake, OH, and their son, Logan Swanson; daughter, Susan (Brian) Rud of Duluth, and their children, Kyle and Kirsten Rud; great grandchildren: Neeley and Caiden Epsen, and Gavin, Vera and Victor Hoggarth; brother, John (Dolores) Furnstahl of Lexington, MA; sisters: Sr. Therese Furnstahl, OSF, and Sr. Anne Furnstahl, OSF, both of Little Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph and Charles Furnstahl; and sister, Sr. Mary Leone, OSF.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Friday, June 14, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Pine River, with Father George Zeck officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 8 PM, with Rosary at 7:30 PM, at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be 2 PM on Friday, June 14, at Minnesota State Veteran's Cemetery, Little Falls.
