Laura Evelyn Budil, 95, of Hackensack, died peacefully December 3, 2012, at her home surrounded by love. Laura was born January 21, 1917 near Lewiston, MN, to Emil and Sophia (Burfeind) Steuernagel. She attended and was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church at Lewiston and graduated from the Lewiston High School. Laura became a beautician and worked in Winona, MN. She then boarded a bus for Chicago with a suitcase in one hand, and her bowling ball in the other. She was signed up for a bowling league in Chicago before she had found a job, or a place to live. While in Chicago, Laura met and married her dear husband Frank Budil on March 31, 1962. Laura and Frank moved to Hackensack, MN in the 70's, where Frank worked until his retirement. Laura quickly became an active member of the community. She volunteered as a hairdresser at Ah-gwah-Ching; as a driver for seniors, and as an active member of the Hackensack Senior Center. Laura loved to cook and bake. She made many gallons of homemade sauerkraut and pickled beets. Laura was best known as the beloved "Pancake Lady" for the Lions Club breakfasts. For 35 years, Laura made gallons of pancake batter from her special recipe. Laura was one of the first two female members of the Lions.
Laura loved her two "weiner" dogs, and often house sat for a multitude of friends and their pets. She loved playing cards with her friends. Until recently, she was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran. She loved her Lord.
Laura was a dearly beloved member of the Hackensack community, and she blessed many, many lives with her vibrant and unique spirit. She will be greatly missed!
Laura's family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the special caregivers, Mary Parish, Jan Bedel, and Jerry Bryant, who daily surrounded Laura with loving care.
Memorials are preferred to the Hackensack Senior Center, or St. Paul's Church.
Laura is survived by her brother, Eldon Steuernagel (Gladys); six nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Frank and two brothers; George and Oscar.
Services will be 10 AM on Friday, December 7, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hackensack.
