Kenneth Kostial

October 25, 1943 — August 16, 2019

Kenneth David Kostial of Longville, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Friday August 16th, 2019, at St Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd, Minnesota, surrounded by those he loved and those who loved him.

Ken was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 25, 1943, to George and Eva Kostial. The family moved to Hopkins, MN in 1946, where Ken grew up.  He graduated from St. Olaf College in 1965. He met his wife-to-be, Barbara in Minneapolis, and they exchanged their marriage vows in Washington D.C. in 1967.  They settled in the Minneapolis area, where they lived, worked and raised their family. Ken spent most of his career as an executive at Honeywell Corporation, retiring in 2000 and moving with Barb full time to the Longville, MN area, a place he truly considered God’s country.

Ken utilized his skills acquired during his work life and became very active in his local community, and among many other activities, was on the Boards of the Cass County Planning Commission, Longville Area Community Foundation, Woman Lake Property Owners Association, and Backus Municipal Joint Airport Zoning Board. He had also been active in the Church Council of Salem Lutheran Church in Longville for a number of years.

Ken was a loving father, grandfather, son, big brother, uncle, and the most devoted husband ever. He truly lived up to his marriage vows in caring for his wife Barb, in “sickness and in health”, after she suffered a debilitating stroke. This was the focus of his life up to his passing, and his eternal love and spirit will always be by her side.

Ken had a great sense of humor, never took himself too seriously, and was always engaging with others. He was a history buff extraordinaire and could never pass up a good history book. Later in life he rejuvenated his childhood interest in model railroading, and attended train shows whenever the opportunity arose, and discovered that adding to his collection was only a click away on Ebay.

Ken was a friend, a counselor, an advisor, a mentor, and a helper to many. He has left his mark, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Ken was preceded in death by parents, George and Eva Kostial. He is survived by wife Barbara, sons Brad and David (Jennifer), grandchildren Nathan, Elizabeth, and Megan, brothers Keith (Maureen), and Dean, and nieces and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 29 at 3:30pm at Salem Lutheran Church, 1340 County Road 5. Longville, MN, with visitation one hour prior to service and reception to follow.  A private interment will be held at a later date at the Howard Lake Cemetery in Howard Lake MN.
