Joe OleOBrien, 76, of Onamia, died Thursday, April 30, 2009 at the Riverview Health Care Center in Aitkin. Services for Joe will be 11 AM, Monday, May 4, 2009 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN with Larry Amik officiating. Friends are welcome to gather one hour prior to services. Reception will follow services at the Brenny Funeral Chapel Reception Room. At a later date interment will take place at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls.
Joe was born February 8, 1933 in Sawyer, MN, the son of Tom and Caroline (Sayers) OBrien. At an early age, Joes family moved to Cass Lake. He attended Flandreau Indian School in Flandreau, SD. He enlisted in the Army and later the Marines. He served for 23 years. Following his honorable discharge, Joe worked in law enforcement.
Joe enjoyed boxing and was a boxing mentor. He took a team of boxers to Germany to compete. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren.
Joe will be missed by his special friend, Susanna; his children, Joel OBrien, Patricia OBrien, Jay OBrien, and Joni OBrien; nine grandchildren; brother, Henry; and sister, Nancy. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter; and a sister.
