Jean Hillyer

Carroll "Jean" Hillyer, age 88, of Pine River, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society, Pine River. She was born to Herbert and Blanche Phenis on December 19, 1925, in Toledo, Iowa. Jean worked for the Pine River Journal and Walker Pilot Independent as a linotype operator for many years, and from the early 1970's until retirement was a rural mail carrier, delivering for the west Backus/Hackensack routes. She was an avid reader, she enjoyed sewing, writing humorous poetry, drawing Disney cartoon characters for her children and putting puzzles together.

Jean is survived by her children: Mike Shepard of Pine River, Margie Richards (Ray) of Pine River, Mark Shepard (Renee) of Backus; Rick Shepard (Cindy) of Elko; stepdaughter, Geneva Lybeck; 13 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Bud" Hillyer; stepsons, Roger and Dean; great granddaughter, Kathlynn Shepard; and sisters: Hazel Phenis, Ruth Olsen, Mildred Linden, Marge Clough and Phyllis Hansen.

Services will be 2 PM on Saturday, March 1, at First Lutheran Church, Pine River. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
