Jay Schmidtke

Jay Schmidtke, age 89, of Backus, passed away Monday, February 7, 2011, at his home. He was born October 25, 1921, in Charles City, Iowa, to George and Martha Schmidtke. Jay served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He owned Pine Mountain Resort since 1963. He was an active member of the Backus American Legion and loved fishing and trapping.

Jay is survived by his sons, Mark Schmidtke (Heather), and Steven Schmidtke (Becky); sister, Dorothy Leary; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Leatta.

Services will be 2 PM on Friday, February 11, at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River, with Pastor Mel Nefstead officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Minnesota State Veteran's Cemetery, Camp Ripley.
