James C. Thompson, age 81, of Motley, passed away at his home on Monday night. Memorial Service will be Friday Oct. 27 at 11:00 am at the United Methodist Church in Motley, with Rev. Dorothy J. Bull officiating, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the MN State Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Randall VFW Post 9073. James was born on June 7, 1925 in Garrison, MN, the first child of James and Alice (Jones) Thompson. At a young age his family moved to the Nisswa area where Jim attended school and graduated from the Pequot Lakes High School. In 1943 Jim entered the Navy and served aboard the USS Intrepid. After his return home in 1946 he entered college at the University of Minnesota where he pursued a degree in Business Administration. On August 26, 1947 he married Patricia Cook at the Nisswa Community Church, and together they raised six children. He began working on his father-in-laws turkey farm until he purchased his own farm near Motley a short time later. In the late 1970s he managed the Motley Hardware store until his retirement. After retiring he continued to keep himself busy playing cards, hunting, fishing, and with his garden and canning, and putting up wood for the winter. He was a longtime member of the Randall VFW Post 9073 and served on the Scandia Valley Town Board. Jim is survived by his wife, Pat; children, Susan Thompson-Grewe, Kathleen, Jackie (Michael) Cade, Sherry, James (Jeanine), and Patrice ; 13 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; a brother, Bill (Jean); sister-in-law, Suzanne Thompson; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John; and son-in-law, Frank. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.
