James (Jim) Irvin Ackerson, age 71, passed away unexpectedly April 25, 2014 at his rural Brainerd home. Memorial service for Jim will be held at a later date.
Jim was born January 27, 1943 in Burlington, IA to James and Dorothy Ackerson. Jim was a 1961 graduated of Washington Senior High School in Brainerd. After graduation, he enlisted in the US Army, taking his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Later, he transferred to the National Guard, participating in advanced training at Camp Ripley. Jim spent many years in the western United States working at various construction and mining jobs. A serious accident forced him to retire early. He subsequently returned to Brainerd to be closer to his family. Jim’s happiest days were spent outdoors fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed NASCAR, Minnesota Twins and Vikings and spending time with friends and family. He lived life the way he chose and was always willing to lend a hand when needed.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Christina Ackerson of Coon Rapids, MN; grandchildren, Alicia and Marisa Koski, Brittany and Steven Wells; two great grandchildren; sisters, Beverly Knerr of Kirkland, WA, Brenda (Gary) Merryfield of Shiocton, WI; brother Michael (Gwen) Ackerson of Isanti, MN. He is further survived by his nieces and nephews, Doreen Humphrey, Brian Knerr, Lori Knerr, Joe Ackerson and Emily Ackerson. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Alvin Knerr. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN.
