Helma C. McCoy, age 72, of Leader, passed away at the Lakewood Health System Hospital on Tuesday, February 9. Visitation from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, February 12 at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples with funeral services on Saturday, February 13 at 11:00 A.M. at Motley Free Methodist with Pastor Mel Nefstead officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Cemetery in Poplar.
Helma Cecelia Scheid was born on May 22, 1937 in Farming Township (near Albany) to Herman and Elizabeth (Baumgartner) Scheid. She moved to the Motley area with her family and graduated from Motley High School. Helma received her teaching degree and taught in a country school near Leader. In 1959 she was united in marriage to Ronald Eugene Peet. They had five children, Susan Peet; Eugene (Beth) Peet; Brenda (Jim) Alexander; Kim Peet (Pat Cunningham) and Michelle (Greg) Benson. Her husband Ronald died in 1986. Helma married Barney McCoy in 1995. She was a member of Swan Valley Lutheran Church in Leader. She enjoyed gardening; flowers; birds; volunteering at school, canning, especially pickles and was a member of the Staples Lions.
Helma is survived by her children; her grandchildren, Rylee Greig; Kaitlyn Hanson; Ashlyn Peet; Alexa Peet; Cadence Benson; sisters, Yvonne (Gordan) Sampson; Vivian Youngberg; Betty Johannes; Joan (Ray) Dailey; Linda Johnson; and Marlys (Jeff) Braith.
Helma was preceded in death by her first husband, Ronald Peet; parents, Herman and Elizabeth Scheid; sister, Joyce Jackson; brother, Kenneth three brother-in-laws, Tony Youngberg, John Johannes and Bruce Johnson.
