Hazel L. Nelson, age 99, of Staples, passed away on Tuesday August 28, 2007 at the Lakewood Health System Care Center. Services are planned for Friday, August 31, at 11:00 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples with Rev. Robin Collins officiating. There will be a time to visit with the family one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.
Hazel was born on July 25, 1908 to Palmer and Nannie (Durbin) Golpen, on the family farm just north of Motley. She graduated from Motley High School in 1926 and went on finished a two year program in teaching. In 1931 she married Art Nelson, after meeting him while she was teaching at the Craft School, north of Leader, and the two of them were blessed with two children. She and Art farmed for many years, where she was known as the Egg Ladybecause f the number of hens she raised every year, until retiring in 1981. Art passed away in 1983 and Hazel moved into an apartment in Staples. A few years ago she moved to the Harmony House in Motley and then to the Lakewood Care Center this past fall. Hazel was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Staples.
Hazel is survived by her children, Allan (Diane) Nelson and Joan Nelson; grandchildren, Susan (Robert) Schinas, Debra (Scott) McParland, Joe (Nora) Tapia, and Russell Tapia; 7 great-grandchildren; and 4 great, great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; parents, Palmer and Nannie (Durbin) Golpen; brother, Alvin; and sister, Claire. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples. www.brenny.com
