Gustav Schlick, 72, of Brainerd, formerly of Cannon Falls, died peacefully on Tuesday morning, April 3, 2007 at the St. Josephs Medical Center in Brainerd. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 11 AM, Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter with Reverend Vern Broughton officiating. There will be a second Memorial Service in Cannon Falls at a later date. Interment will follow cremation at the Cannon Falls Cemetery Association in Cannon Falls. Memorials are preferred to the Donors Choice.
Gus was born September 17, 1934 in Lucan, to Gustav and Pearl (Woolley) Schlick. His family moved to Cannon Falls in 1940 where he grew up to be an active member of the community. He received his Eagle Scout Award while working at Torkelson Hatchery and the Cannon Falls Bakery. In 1953, Gus graduated from Cannon Falls High School before graduating with a BS from Minnesota State University at Mankato. He began his teaching career at Janesville and Gaylord. Gus then joined the Peace Corps where he taught for two years in Katsina, Nigeria and for three years with Teachers of West Africa. After his return, he taught at Waldorf Pemberton while pursuing his Masters in Education at the Minnesota State University at Mankato where he composed his thesis: Ferns in Goodhue County. Gus then moved to Brainerd in 1969 where he taught until his retirement in 1990. Gus not only was a teacher, but a gardener of all things even Shitake Mushrooms, a fisherman, a hunter, a cook, a world traveler, and an active member of the North Long Lake Association at his residence on North Long Lake and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Gus also enjoyed playing bridge.
Gus was an interesting, kind person who will be missed by many friends and relatives: his brother, Merton (Elenor) Schlick, of Preston; his sisters, Jan (Gene) Schmidt, of Deerwood and Virginia (Harvey) Lundell, of Cannon Falls; sister-in-laws, Carol Schlick, of St. Louis Park and June Holmen, of Deerwood; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Pearl Schlick; brothers, Calvin Schlick and Gerald Schlick; nephew, David Lundell; and grand-nephew, Lance Kehren.
